Durbin: Grant would aid search for missing kids

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin is joining more than a dozen colleagues pushing legislation to help an agency that searches for missing children.

The legislation would give the Florida-based organization called A Child is Missing $5 million a year for six years.

Durbin says A Child is Missing generates 1,000 calls every 60 seconds to phone numbers in the area where the missing person was last seen. It often is up and running more quickly than law enforcement's Amber Alert.

He says the organization is the only one that assists police with all missing people. Amber Alert only activates in cases of abduction.

A Child is Missing is credited with helping police find 500 people since it started in 1997.
